Abstract Mean age theory is introduced to characterize the mixing performance of tundish based on spatial distribution tracer’s mean age. Conventional residence time was widely used in analysis; however, it contains no information local states. Based distribution, melt change efficiency defined as a index evaluate how quickly old can be replaced by young from ladle. Case studies, divided into three groups, were carried out test applicability new single-strand with flow control devices weir, dam and turbulence inhibitor.
